How are moles examined?

At Wellskin Dermatology & Aesthetic Clinic, the team uses state-of-the-art technology from DermEngine™, the MoleScope™. The MoleScope captures high-resolution images of your moles using a special lighting system and high magnification. 

This highly detailed method of mole imaging allows the team to examine the moles in greater detail than with a manual exam. The team may also collect a small sample from your mole to test it for skin cancer (a biopsy). 

The team also uses Castle Biosciences technology to further analyze dangerous melanomas using next-generation genetic sequencing. The test offers a more in-depth look at melanomas, allowing the team to obtain as much information as possible from one biopsy.

How often do I need a mole check?

Wellskin Dermatology & Aesthetic Clinic recommends a yearly skin cancer screening to check the skin all over your body, including careful mole examination and imaging. 

During a skin cancer screening, the team evaluates all benign, abnormal-but-benign, precancerous, and cancerous moles and skin lesions. 

While skin cancer screening is important for everyone, it’s particularly vital if you have a family history of skin cancer or if you’re at risk due to other reasons. With yearly skin cancer screenings, the team can detect dangerous and potentially dangerous skin growths in their earliest forms, which gives you the highest chance for successful removal.

If you develop a new mole, or if your mole suddenly changes in any way, schedule an exam at Wellskin Dermatology & Aesthetic Clinic as soon as possible. Melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer, can appear as a new or rapidly-changing mole.

Do I need mole removal?

Cosmetic reasons

If you dislike the mole for appearance reasons, for example, if it’s in a prominent spot on your face or body, the team can remove it.

Comfort reasons

Some moles are benign but still cause a problem in terms of comfort. If your mole irritates you, for example, it rubs uncomfortably against your shirt, removal is a simple solution.

Preventive and curative reasons

If your mole is cancerous, removal is the best way to prevent the skin cancer from spreading. If your mole is at risk of becoming cancerous, removal is usually a wise preventive tactic. 

Mole removal is an in-office procedure with local anesthesia. You can return to your normal activities afterward, following the team’s guidelines about caring for your mole removal site.
